There are many ways to measure a saddle. However, the basic steps are the exact same for both types. Measure from your lower leg to the saddle and measure the distance between your knees and the seat. You might need to measure slightly different depending on your body type. Before buying a new saddle, ensure your measurements are accurate.

Start by measuring the horse's shoulder width. A measuring tool about two feet in diameter is enough for a small horse. You can measure the horse's withers using a string or an eight-inch wire. Make sure to mark the center of the measurement with a pencil. Next, place eight inches of measuring tape on each side. Then, wrap the wire around the horse's back and press down to bring it into contact with his skin.

A general English saddle is made with a cantle (and pommel) that are roughly equal in width. The pommel might be higher than the cantle. It should fit the horse's back evenly. A western saddle is slightly different. The saddle should be about two to three fingers wide at its gullet. If it's too narrow, a different type of saddle may be recommended. While English saddles are easier to fit, it's still necessary to take measurements of other types of saddles.

The gullet is a crucial part of the saddle. A wrongly-measured gullet can cause the saddle to slip and roll, hurt the horse's back, or even put the rider off the horse. These outcomes are not ideal, especially on busy roads. So, make sure to measure your horse's gullet size before buying a saddle. A medium-sized horse will usually need a medium-sized saddle.

First, measure your child’s thighs. The thigh should measure between ten to eleven inches. The length of the upper leg should be between 11 and 12 inches. Once you have determined your child’s thigh measurement you can then measure their height to buy a saddle. The seat width should measure approximately one-half inches to two ins longer than their thigh.

Next, measure the width of your saddle. Measure the width of the saddle across the entire font, level with the . This is important as the width of the saddle bars will indicate how wide the saddle. Half-quarter and full Qtr bars are 6.5 to seven inches wide, while draft saddle bars are eight to ten inches wide. In the picture below, the old saddle on the right is a full quarter into a draft-sized tree, but the angle of the saddle bars is flat.

It is important to consider other dimensions of the saddle in order to ensure a proper fit. When buying a saddle for your child, be mindful of their age. A bigger saddle may be necessary for future use if the child is just beginning. Buy a saddle that can grow with your child if they are growing. They can grow into the saddle as they grow and lose weight, which will allow you to adjust the size accordingly.
